Sarah Zapata

Sarah Zapata makes interesting textiles, using weaving with yarn to execute a hairy, shaggy look to the sculptures. Her sculptures, as seen, are extremely colourful, she uses them to play with the idea of sexuality and femininity. Sarah expresses her sexuality not only through sculpture, but through drag. She regularly hosts drag nights in which she, and other women, will take on their drag personas, resembling men. She typically invites other artists to perform at these alongside her.

Sarah Zapata coils the yarn to create the base of her sculptures, which closely resemble a basket or a plant pot, which then leads the viewer to connect the sculpture as a plant, or tree, or even simply a living organism in itself, a sentient being with a strong personality clearly. I am inspired by Sarah's use of colour and would like to incorporate this into my work in the future. Many people (including me I have realised) will shy away from using more than 2 or 3 colours in one piece of work in fear of it being 'too busy' but I think Sarah does this very eloquently.
